Key December Tax Deadlines for 2025: Essential Actions

Take advantage of this month’s tax strategy reminders, including crucial year-end plans, precise tip reporting, IRA withdrawal requirements, and completing all deductible expenses for 2025.

December 1 - Initiate Year-End Tax Strategy

Ensure you are taking decisive steps during December that could influence your 2025 tax outcome. Taxpayers experiencing notable shifts in income, alterations in marital or dependent status, or those involved in property sales during 2025 should immediately arrange a tax planning consultation to maximize benefits.

December 10 - Essential Tip Reporting to Employers

All employees receiving over $20 in tips in November must report these to their employer through IRS Form 4070 by December 10. Employers are obligated to deduct both FICA and income taxes from your standard wages based on these tips. If your wages aren't sufficient to cover these taxes, the uncollected amount will be reported in box 8 of your W-2, necessitating payment upon filing your year's tax return.

December 31 - IRA Mandatory Withdrawals Deadline

This is the final opportunity to withdraw from a Traditional IRA without penalties if born before January 1, 1952. If you turned 73 in 2025, your first required distribution is applicable for the 2025 tax year, with an option to delay until April 1, 2026. Should your financial institution be closed on December 31, ensure arrangements to withdraw prior to this deadline.

December 31 - Deadline for Deductible Expense Payments

Ensure all deductible expenses eligible for the 2025 tax return are settled by December 31. Note, contributions to IRA, SEP, or Keogh accounts are an exception and can be made subsequent to December 31, 2025.

Be Aware: The Last Day of the Year

Consider acting sooner than December 31 if financial procedures cannot be completed in one day due to possible closures of financial institutions on that day.

Handling Weekends & Holidays:

If a due date lands on a weekend or legal holiday, it will automatically extend to the next business day, unless that too is a holiday.

Extensions for Disaster Areas:

Tax deadlines extend in declared disaster zones. To see if your area is affected and for new filing deadlines, check the following resources:
