March 2026 Tax Agenda: Tip Reporting and The April Countdown

We are officially in the home stretch of tax season. While April 15 gets all the attention, March holds specific obligations for service employees and serves as the critical "one-month warning" for everyone else.

March 10: Reporting Tips to Your Employer

For those in the service industry, tip reporting is a monthly compliance requirement. If you received more than $20 in tips during February, you must report them to your employer by March 10 using IRS Form 4070.

You can use the official form or a signed statement containing your name, address, SSN, employer’s name, the period covered, and the total tips received. Your employer uses this to calculate FICA and income tax withholding from your regular wages.

If your base wages aren't enough to cover the taxes on your tips, the uncollected amount will show up in Box 8 of your W-2, and you will be responsible for paying that balance when we file your annual return.

March 16: The One-Month Warning

We are exactly one month away from the individual filing deadline. If you haven't secured a slot on our calendar yet, please do so immediately. Our schedule fills rapidly during these final weeks.

Don't let missing documents stop you. A common mistake is waiting until you have 100% of your paperwork to call us. We can easily start your return and create a "homework list" for the missing items. It is far better to be in the queue with a pending item than to be scrambling in April.

If you suspect you won't be ready, we should discuss filing an extension now. Remember, an extension to file is not an extension to pay. We can prepare a preliminary estimate to help you pay any tax due by April, minimizing interest and penalties, while buying you time to gather your records.

Standard Rules & Disaster Relief

As always, if a due date falls on a weekend or legal holiday, it pushes to the next business day.

Additionally, tax deadlines are often adjusted for those living in federally designated disaster areas. To verify if your location qualifies for automatic extensions, please review the official resources below:
